Dubai Facts & Figures

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai has a total area of approximately 2,428 sq miles. It is the 2nd largest of 7 Emirates (Cities) making up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi being the largest and the Capital of the UAE. The other five Emirates are Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Qwain and Fujairah.

Location:
Lying at the north-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, the UAE is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the South and West and Oman to the North and East.

Official Language:
Arabic is the national language of the United Arab Emirates, but English is widely spoken along with Hindi, Urdu and Farsi.

Population:
Dubai's population is in excess of 1.5 million, between 2005 and 2006 it rose by 292,000 and average of 25,000 new residents every month!

Currency:
The UAE Dirham (AED) is divided into 100 fils. Notes are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Dirhams. Coins are issued in 5, 10, 25 and 50 fils and 1 Dirham.
Foreign currency and traveller's cheques can be converted at all banks and hotels. International credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere. There are no currency import or export restrictions.

Working Hours:

Business:
An increasing number of businesses work Sunday to Thursday, however, the working week is still mainly Saturday to Wednesday. Office hours vary wildly, but are usually 0700-1300, 1500-1800 or 1600 to 1900 (with a break in between as it can get very hot!)

Banks:
0800 - 1300 Saturday to Thursday. Some banks re-open in the afternoon.

Shops:
0900 - 2000 or later. Many close for a couple of hours at lunchtime, reopening at four or five. Some are closed on Friday, although the downtown souks and major shopping malls tend to remain open.

Climate:
Dubai enjoys 365 days of warm sunshine, with cooler evenings and occasional showers in the months between November and March.
Temperatures range from a low of 10 degrees (Celsius) to a high of 47+ degrees. The average daily temperature is 24 degrees in January, rising to 42 degrees in July.

Airport:
Dubai international Airport is 4km from the city centre.

Taxes
A major incentive to move to Dubai is its status as a free economic zone. No income tax is paid.
